There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a well-kept home — not the silence of emptiness, but the deep, contented hush of a place that has been tended with care. I have spent the better part of eight decades learning the small arts that create it: the beeswax rubbed into old wood until it sighs with warmth, the lemon and vinegar that leave a windowpane singing with light, the lavender tucked into linen that makes climbing into bed feel like a small ceremony. None of it is grand or complicated, and that, I think, is precisely the point. These are the humble, unhurried skills that my mother knew, and her mother before her — skills that somewhere along the way we were persuaded to abandon in favour of plastic bottles and sharp chemical smells, as though efficiency were the only virtue worth having in a home. This little book is my gentle argument that it is not. Within these pages you will find recipes and methods gathered over a long and domestic life, written down at last so that they need not be lost — for making a house feel like a haven is, I firmly believe, one of the most quietly radical and deeply satisfying things a person can do.
