There is a particular kind of magic that lives in a cottage at Christmas — not the loud, glittering sort you find in shop windows, but something quieter and altogether more lasting. It is the magic of a kitchen warm with the smell of cinnamon and slowly browning butter, of paper chains strung by small hands that are not quite as nimble as they imagine, of a pudding stirred on a Sunday in November with every soul in the house taking a turn and making a wish they will not tell. I have spent the better part of eight decades collecting these moments — pressing them like flowers between the pages of my memory — and what you hold now is the very best of them, gathered together at last. These are not recipes or instructions so much as invitations: to slow down, to let the house smell wonderful, to tie a ribbon around something you have made yourself and feel the particular, quiet pride of that. Christmas, I have always believed, is not something you buy. It is something you make — with floury hands and good intentions and, if you are very lucky, someone you love standing close beside you at the stove.
