Why I set this down
There is a particular kind of magic that lives at the intersection of the kitchen and the stillroom — a magic so old it has nearly been forgotten, yet so deeply woven into the fabric of daily life that it stirs something ancestral in us the moment we brush a sprig of rosemary or lift the lid from a pot of simmering broth. This book is my attempt to gather that magic back, to press it between these pages as one might press a sprig of lavender between the leaves of a beloved journal. It is not a book of grand remedies or elaborate prescriptions, but rather a quiet companion for those who wish to cook with intention — who wish to nourish not merely the body's hunger, but its deeper need for warmth, restoration, and the particular comfort that comes from knowing exactly what one has put into one's pot. I have spent the better part of seven decades growing, gathering, cooking, and mending in this small cottage garden, and everything I know worth knowing, I learned first from my hands and only afterwards from books. I hope you find, somewhere in these pages, a recipe that feels like coming home. ---
My grandmother never separated the pantry from the medicine cupboard. A cold was met with a garlic broth, a low mood with a lemon-balm tea, a weary body with a nourishing stew of nettle and barley. This book carries on that quiet tradition: food that feeds and food that heals, made from the herbs at your own back door. Cook from it and you'll find, as I have, that wellness begins at the kitchen table.
