Why I set this down
There is a particular kind of magic that lives in the turning of the year — not the loud, dramatic magic of fireworks or fanfare, but the quiet, persistent kind that hides itself in the first snowdrop pushing through frozen earth, in the smell of woodsmoke on an October evening, in the way afternoon light falls differently in September than it did in June. I have kept journals for more than fifty years, and what I have learnt, slowly and with great gratitude, is that a life noticed is a life more fully lived. This little book is not a planner, nor a productivity guide, nor a system for improving yourself. It is simply an invitation — to sit down, to look around, and to write a few honest words about what you find. May it become, in time, something you reach for the way you reach for a warm cup of tea: not because you must, but because it comforts you, and because it is yours.
We were not meant to live all twelve months the same. There is a time for planting and a time for rest, a time for open windows and a time for the fire lit early. This journal is my invitation to live with the year rather than against it — to mark the first snowdrop, the last apple, the evening the swallows leave. Fill its pages with your own small observations, and you will find, as I have, that a slower life is a fuller one.
