Why I set this down
There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a kitchen when something gentle is being made — when beeswax melts slowly in a bain-marie, or a bar of soap rests cooling beneath a cotton cloth, or a small pot of lavender balm sets firm on the windowsill while the garden breathes outside. This little book was born of that quiet, and of a lifelong belief that the most nourishing things we can bring into our homes are the ones we have made ourselves, with patience and with care. Nothing here is complicated. Nothing requires special talent or expensive equipment. What it asks of you is only time, a little curiosity, and the willingness to slow down long enough to notice the pleasure in the doing. I hope these pages feel less like instructions and more like an old friend sitting beside you at the kitchen table, sharing what she knows.
When I was young, we made most of what filled the home: beeswax candles for the long evenings, soap scented with lavender from the garden, polish for the old oak. There is a deep satisfaction in it that shop-bought things can never give. In these pages I share my gentlest, most reliable recipes — no complicated equipment, no strange ingredients, only honest craft you can do at the kitchen table. Make them for your own home, or wrap them in brown paper and string as the loveliest of gifts.
